✪...what The Different know...✪

Let me just start by saying when I became a Melissa fan, she seemed so untouchable. She was this amazing rock star that I would be shocked if I ever got to even see live, the thought of meeting her wasn't even in my realm of thinking. So when I met her for the 2nd time on June 27th '09, I realized the Universe truly does listen, & nothing is impossible.
Amy & I attended the Memphis/Tunica travel package on the 26th & 27th of June, & it was one of the most wonderful weekends we've ever experienced. I must say on the road trip from AR to TN we did see the best stereotype ever; 2 lesbians pulling a U-Haul lol! Anyway, we stayed in the Heartbreak Hotel in Graceland, & M.E.I.N. threw the welcome party at the Rock & Roll Cafe. I met several boardies there (hello wonderful Brits & delightful Lissa!), & our bouncy hosts; Marc, Cyndy, & Estella. I won a "The Awakening Of Oz" hoodie (which will hang on my wall eventually), & Amy won a really cool sun shade for her car. After the party Amy, Lissa & I headed to the world famous Beal Street in Memphis, where I've never been IDed so many times in my life! They ID you to get in to the street, at the door of every bar/club, & then again when you buy the drink! Anyway, we had a really great time shopping in such unique stores, & I found the Coyote Ugly bar really awesome. After we had some drink in us it was time to head back to the hotel.
Saturday Amy & I dragged ourselves out of bed to meet most of our TP party in the lobby for the 11:00 tour of Graceland. I'm not a big Elvis fan, but I do have to admit standing in his actual house was pretty overwhelming. To spend the weekend after Michael Jackson died touring Elvis's house, & meeting Melissa was such a surreal experience, & I can't imagine a better group of people to live it with. Anyway, we toured his house & plane (pic. link below), & I can say I feel a bit more connected to The King now. After that we headed back to Beal Street for lunch at The Hard Rock Cafe & some more shopping. Back at the hotel we changed & met everyone in the lobby. Tickets were drawn, & I pulled 2nd row. Needless to say I was bummed when I could have had 1st. Then it was time to board our private chartered bus & head to Tunica (about 20 minutes away). At this point I was still surprisingly calm, scared Amy a little lol. The group established our meeting place in the casino, & then Amy, Lissa & I headed off to play the slots. This was my 1st time in a casino, & it's really weird to be in a place with no windows! I won $7, Amy won $17, & Lissa won $90 (wow). It was so cool to see so many dykes walking around knowing we were all there for the same reason. I bet the regular gamblers had no idea their beloved casino was going to get overrun by lesbians lol!
Meeting time rolled around & my stomach started to flip, oops. Good thing I hadn't eaten since lunch! In fact Estella asked me if I was going to pass out when I told her I wasn't eating the buffet dinner there lol. Our tickets were scanned, our passes were checked, & we were lead thru the arena to the backstage area. This was a tiny section where a purple tarp that said "Harrah's" was hanging as the backdrop for the pictures. I had chosen to be the 3rd group to meet her, & I was so glad I had that time to breath deeply. My goal was to not cry! We (30+) scrunched in there like really cute sardines & tried to carry on small talk as we waited for Melissa to come in. A few minutes later we see Steven & Stephanie come down the hall (from the dressing rooms) with a very famous lady behind them. The room erupts in applause & cheers as her genuine smile & voice warm up the little space. The first group walks up to meet her, & I looked at Amy & said "I'm OK...surprisingly enough." I almost cried, but held it back & found a center again. Whew, maybe I could pull this off! The 2nd group goes, & then we walk up there. Lissa was 1st & told a great story to Melissa about how M told Lissa that she needed singing lessons at a concert once, & Melissa looked so surprised & looked over at me "why would I say that? There's no way I said that!" A good laugh was had by all, & then Amy said what she wanted to & introduced me (as her fiance'). OK this was it, time for my brain & mouth to work together for once in their lives. We shook hands as I said "I'm LuckyLauren from the message board" & her face lit up. "Oh, you're the one!" Amy added "yes, the famous one!" My brain was screaming "Oh my God, Melissa knows who I am...this can't be happening!!" but luckily my actions didn't show it. I lifted the box I had been clutching & opened it, saying "I know how much we both like jewelry that has a meaning, so I bought you this." Buy this time she also had her hands on the box & I was casually making eye contact...but more importantly, I wasn't crying or talking a million miles an hour! I went on "This is a karma knot pendent, & I also think it looks kind of like an atom. You know 'all there is is atoms & space...'" She was completely paying attention to what I was saying, agreeing with every point I made & seemed to really like the gift; "That's really cool" I told her "of course you can string it on whatever you want" & I touched mine that's on a chain. Before she walked away I said "I do have 1 request, 'The Different.'" She was like "Hum I'll see, I've already changed the set list twice for tonight." I asked for a hug & she said "of course." While we hugged I said in her ear "thank you for everything," & when we pulled away she took both of my hands & said "thank you for everything." She met the rest of the people in my group & the last one asked her what "The Different" was about, thanks to my request. Melissa said she wrote it at a time when she had been trying to be like everyone else, & finally embraced being different & found happiness. She turned to all of us & exclaimed "don't we all need to embrace being different!?" We all cheered, it was too cool that I got to hear more about my favorite song. Now it was picture time, & Amy & I had already agreed to be the ones to kneel on either side of her (like we would miss the opportunity to be in the front with Melissa's hands on our shoulders!) So as I was getting down all I could think was "be somewhat graceful & don't knock her over! The next thing I know I hear "owe, you stepped on my foot!" I knew it was behind me, so it couldn't be the rocker's. (Turns out it was Lissa's, sorry girl!) But I hear Melissa say "don't step on me!" It was so cute! So we took the picture (see below), & the other groups met her. We all cheered when the 3 of them (Steven & Stephanie loaded down with gifts, Melissa hands them off as she opens them) walked back down the hall. We went back to the lobby to buy shirts (the new designs are really cool, loving them), get some water, & pee before the show.
We walk down to our 2nd row seats & set all our stuff down, & there are already alot of people from the first few rows in the pit. I walk over & take a look at the set list...no sign of my request. "Oh well" I think, "it was a long shot anyway." Then someone comes & swaps out the list, but I'm able to get a look at it. We all planned on just standing up there for the whole show, but security comes over & tells us to sit down. We aren't in out seats 2 minutes when the lights go down & we all walk back up there lol! I guess security didn't feel like moving a few hundred people because we don't hear a peep out of them all night. There is the stage, a fan, & then me, not bad at all! The pit is my absolute favorite place to be at a show, especially a MLE one. I love being able to see her eyes as she looks at me, every expression she makes, her fingers work those magic strings, hear her when she's away from the microphone, & be surrounded by the energy of fellow fans. Suddenly her famous silhouette appears with that famous guitar straight up, & I lose it. It's been 1 of my dreams since I became a fan to see her live & alone...& this is it! The rocking cords of "All American Girl" fill the arena, & I sing my heart out! This is one of my favorite rocking songs...it just makes me want to throw furniture!! (Dad described really great rock as generating so much energy inside you that the only way to express it is throw furniture...perfect description!) I must say I'm so glad to see the return of the jeans, & she looks better in them than ever. ;) After that's over she says "Hello Tennessee!!" & somehow we are loud enough to mention that she isn't in Tennessee, but Mississippi. "But I landed in TN?!" "Yes!" She's quite confused, it's too cute. She proves she knows her geography by listing most of the southern states & where they are in relation to each other. What is funny is she's looking right at me while she did, little does she know I have no sense of direction! It's quite cool to hear her mention Arkansas several times throughout the show. She looks down & sees her shoe is kinda untied, saying "I would bend down to tie it but then you could see my white socks. Are white socks rock & roll?" We all cheer, saying yes. She goes on talking as she always does (I hope she never stops talking at her shows!), & goes on about how 1 of the fans earlier in the night had asked her about "The Different." "I say it's you & me baby, anybody who is living life & loving it. And realizing we are all different & in that we are all the same...you see how that works?" She starts playing the cords & I just say "oh my God"...I can't believe is was happening! She changed the set list for me & my request (the 2nd song was listed as "California")...whow. I sing my heart out, this is unbelievable! (That song is what turned me from just a fan, to a completely devoted fan who buys TPs, lol. "Skin" was the 1st album of her's I ever bought. When I heard The Different I just sat there, stunned. Not only was this one of the most awesome sounding songs I had ever heard...but this woman got me. She understood it all, even things I didn't know were part of me. I have part of it framed on my bedside table, & read it as a daily reminder. Hearing that song was a total full circle moment for me, I will never forget it.) As far as I'm concerned my night is made, hell, my month is! "In case you are wondering when the band is coming out...their not, it's just me. I like to do these alone tours every now & then, they keep me honest." Next was "Nowhere To Go," a song I had almost forgotten about. It creates such a lovely moment for Amy & me as she wraps her arms around me & we sway to the song, singing it as much to each other as to Melissa. "I Need To Wake Up" is amazing as always, & as soon as she starts the chords to "You Can Sleep While I Drive" the entire place erupts with cheers & applause. She stops the song & is like "thank you & goodnight!" It's so damn funny! After that she moves to the amoebae stage (the smaller one on the upper level with the piano. It has microphones in so her stomping can be heard really well) & rocked the hell out of "Chrome Plated Heart." To hear that song live & alone is to hear that song at it's best, no question! There is nothing as hot as her jamming the fuck out, head banging, & just completely getting lost in the rhythm. She steps off & hands off that sexy electric guitar to one of her techs, & then starts walking towards me with the pick she had used for the first 6 songs. I'm so busy screaming & clapping that it really doesn't occur to me what's happening until I see her lean over other hands to place the pick in mine & close my fingers around it. Wow, this makes 2 she has placed in my hand...I still can't believe it. I jump up & down & scream, while crying just a little. I stick it deep in my pocket, & feel for it about every 5 minuets for the rest of the show. I love the lights she's using. She doesn't have any kind of set (just the leveled stage), but the awesome lights create a different atmosphere for each song. I really love the designs on the ceiling & wall behind her, & the pink lights during "I Run For Life." She does 2 piano songs ("The Weakness In Me" & "The Letting Go"), a wonderful change from not having any last tour. "Mercy" gets a new twist when she pulls out the harmonica "it's in the rock & roll handbook that when you tour alone you have to play the harmonica...because we all just want to be Bob Dylan" lol! The 2 covers are smokin' on that amoebae stage, daym! I could watch her jam alone all night, I swear it's so freaking sexy. At one point in the show she's talking about flying (she's flying stop to stop this tour), & how crazy airport security is. "I would like to know, when did America lose it's mind? Since when does shampoo equal a bomb? I was going thru security & this elderly lady asked me what we are supposed to do. As I was explaining it all I realized how insane it sounded. 'You have to take off your shoes, & then take off your clothes & turn around & do the hokey pokey...'" We all bust up because it's so true! "I Want You" is such a treat, 1st time she's performed it in 20 years! She misses a few of the words (I think the lyrics are taped next to the set list lol), but it's still blistering. She even mentioned that "she was a naughty girl at 21, & she has a naughty girl at home now," ooh la la. ;) The rest of the show flies by! Since she's alone this time I think she gets tired a tad more easily, so the show's only 2 hours...but what a 2 hours they were! Hands at the end were really rushed, but I still managed to touch her hand...just barely. I hope she slows them down again. This woman is a true entertainer, period. She held us in the palm of her hand with only her voice, 2 guitars, a harmonica ("Mercy" got a wonderful makeover using it) & a piano for the entire evening. To know every sound coming from that stage is solely her talent filling up the Universe is a feeling I can never accurately put into words. The more I see (& meet) her the more the "OMG that is Melissa Etheridge the famous rock star!!" factor goes down, & the "oh hey there's Melissa my friend & sister, lets rock for awhile" factor goes up. I really love that feeling more than I can say, it's so much better. Thank you Melissa, once again you have been my therapist, inspiration, friend, sister, & so much more without knowing it. I will see you again!!
